WoW Mage Guide
Mages are the burst power for raids, five man dungeons, and even PVP. Mages are also good to have in five man dungeons for their ability to buff the healer with intellect giving them more mana. A good mage can crowd control and damage a target so that they don’t even reach the mage for a counterattack. Some people consider mages to be overpowered, but because of their ability to only use cloth armor, the mage needs to be able to get away from an attacker. A warlock has pets to stun an assailant, a priest has fear and healing, so a mage’s only defense is the ability to keep targets from reaching him.
WoW Mage Guide – Professions
Most mages decide to use tailoring as a main profession. Tailoring armor throughout the leveling process greatly increases your survival rate and it can help you level faster. Many of the tailoring equipment bring extra intellect (mana) and extra spell power. Mages with tailoring can also sell a lot of their equipment for extra money.
A great way to make extra gold and increase stats is to take on enchanting as a secondary profession. The items made through tailoring can be disenchanted and the materials used to enchant your items. You can also increase enchanting by asking other party members if they would like a free enchant. Most players will oblige and you will level enchanting faster.
WoW Mage Guide – Abilities
Mages have three trees to choose from – fire, frost, or arcane. Depending on which area of World of Warcraft you want to play (arenas vs. raids) will help you decide which tree you prefer. Most mages go frost or fire and use the arcane tree as a supportive, secondary tree.
Fire mages have ultimate burst damage. Their fireball damage is amazingly potent. Fire spells may take a little longer to cast, but their massive damage can take down an enemy before they realize where the fireball came from. Fire is probably the easiest to of the mage talents to play.
Frost is secondary to fire. Frost may not bring the damage like a fire mage, but the benefits of the crowd control can cause an enemy to slow while you just blast frost bolts at them. A melee character has little chance against a frost mage that continually slows them down eliminating the chance for them to even hit the mage.
Arcane is a tree that is relatively great for raiding. The reason it is used secondary to frost or fire is that it does not give the extra damage bonuses, but it fortifies the mage in mana reserves allowing the mage to last longer in raids. Playing a mage in mana intensive, so the arcane tree gives them the ability to conserve mana and be able to continue damage throughout a long fight.
